Textile applications of photochromic dyes. Part 3: factors affecting the technical performance of textiles screen-printed with commercial photochromic dyes
This is the second in a series of papers reporting the development of methods whereby commercially-available photochromic dyes, designed industrially for ophthalmic applications, are adapted for textiles, thus complementing parallel studies reported in a separate series of papers on specifically-synthesised dyes. This paper quantifies the effect of experimental and physical factors on photochromic performance of screen-printed dyes, exploiting specifically-devised instrumental colour measurement methodology for assessing colour-change properties. The research technically underpins two practice-based PhDs, creatively exploring textile design using photochromism, providing formulations and application methods, and establishing an understanding of the challenges and limitations in using these dyes.
