Musorgsky and His Circle

Research for this book on the kuchka was particularly arduous and extensive because of the unusually broad nature of the topic: a study of the work and intellectual context of five composers, forming a group whose work had not previously been treated as a whole in an academic book. This amounted to the preparation of five separate composer volumes covering both biographical and musical material, as well as a great deal of historical, philosophical and background musical material. Many of the source texts were in Russian; the music included obscure and out of print material never before discussed in English.
