This invited paper to the journal's Special Issue on Power Electronics, Machines and Drives provides the first practical assessment of how short-circuit faults across the windings of a fault-tolerant generator affect the down-stream DC bus voltage. The potential for voltage-collapse instability is identified within the DC bus when an energy storage device is present and a control technique is presented to prevent the instability. The importance of this work for the next generation DC distribution systems in future aircraft has been recognised by the sponsor Rolls-Royce in its ASTRAEA 2 programme (contact details available; DOI:10.1049/cp.2010.0048).
