Biological functionalization of a sol-gel coating for the mitigation of microbial-induced corrosion
This paper presents, for the first time, the route by which a room-temperature curable sol-gel technology can be used to immobilise 'living species' and, thereby, mitigate microbial-induced corrosion (bio-corrosion). The technology developed here is patent pending as EP2190935. Applications for the concepts introduced in this paper include anti-biofouling coatings, particularly for the marine industry. The methods proposed would both reduce costs and introduce an environmentally friendly, non-toxic approach for addressing this issue. SHU has worked closely with International Paint Ltd (div of Akzo Nobel), one of the world's leading manufacturers of antifouling paint in the validation of this technology.
