Significance of output:

The paper arose from a project funded by the European Research Council (PI: m.i.friswell@swansea.ac.uk). It developed the Zigzag wingbox, a novel adaptive structure concept, which allows the wing span to be varied by up to 50% to enhance flight performance. The paper derives equivalent stiffness models allowing robust and efficient design and optimisation. Furthermore, it considers the integration of fibre-reinforced elastomeric skin to maintain smooth aerodynamic surface.
