Additional information

Joining of composite components with countersunk bolts is used extensively in aerospace structures yet the behaviour of these joints cannot be fully predicted and so optimisation of joint designs is restricted. A very detailed FE model was presented of a single lap shear composite joint which included bolt preload and a complete contact definition. Parametric studies clearly demonstrated the effects of coefficient of friction, clamping force and clearance, and good agreement was achieved with experiments. The work led to a patent application for an improved bolt design (GB1301772.8) and participation in the Airbus-led EU Level 2 project SARISTU.
