Upwind sail aerodynamics: A RANS numerical investigation validated with wind tunnel pressure measurements
This internationally co-authored paper presents the first comparison in upwind sail aerodynamics, between pressures computed with CFD and pressures measured in a wind-tunnel. It raises the level of CFD validation from that of global forces to a complete pressure field at the sail surface.
Subsequently this work contributed to an improved understanding of the critical problem (keynote lecture, http://goo.gl/MpjWpH) of the Reynolds number effect in sail aerodynamics (ISBN:978-0-939773-88-6, 278-296).
The work underpinned a €230k grant (FP7-318924+RSNZ) that developed an intensive senior-staff exchange programme between leading research groups in sail aerodynamics: University of Auckland (NZ), r.flay@auckland.ac.nz; Ecole Naval (FR), patrick.bot@ecole-navale.fr
