<28> This was an invited contribution to the journal. The authors were asked to position, define and structure the new research field of animal biometrics; namely the application of computer vision and pattern recognition, in general, to animal identification, classification and analysis. The work is the outcome of an international collaboration with the Max-Planck Institute (Leipzig) and the Fraunhofer Institute (IIS and IDMT).
