This refereed chapter argues for a canonic readjustment between the recognized authority, Messiaen, and his as yet overlooked compatriot. ‘Although Jolivet was eclipsed by Olivier Messiaen as a French modernist, I posit that Jolivet “had a profound influence on Messiaen’s non-Western theoretical explorations” (p. 187)’ (Notes, March 2009). This claim is substantiated by archival research and discussion of Jolivet’s personal library and writings, and by culturally contextualized interpretation of musical materials, with ‘Deborah Mawer’s insightful ... [and] lucid analysis’ (Musical Times, 2008).
