As noted by Soler et al. [International Journal of Plasticity 36(2012)50], the explanations in this paper were "first advanced" by us. These ideas were later developed by Dunstan and Bushby [International Journal of Plasticity 40(2013)152], eventually leading to the conclusion that the Hall-Petch relationship was erroneous.This paper represents an area of work that led to the hiring of Korte as a Junior Professor at the University of Erlangen-Nurnberg, on Oct 1 2013, and, more recently as a full Professor at RWTH Aachen, as well as involvement in grant awards EPSRC (EP/H500375/1) and EU (263206, AccMet).
