This 122,000 word book, supported by grants and fellowships from the AHRC, Leverhulme Trust, Huntington Library and British Academy, is based on archival research in UK and US libraries and archives, and draws on the examination of some 4000-5000 individual manuscript letters, diaries, estate papers, maps and drawings. Seasonal fieldwork on individual sites was undertaken over a number of years. The published primary texts cited (more than 100) represent a small percentage of those consulted for a project searching disparate and wide-ranging sources for references to the role of women in gardens.
