Thomas Betterton. The Greatest Actor of the Restoration Stage
This study draws on five articles previously published, three of which were entered for RAE2008. Full bibliographical details are given in the preface. The proportions of those articles that have transferred intact to this output are as follows: ‘Shakespeare, Theater Criticism and the Acting Tradition’ for Shakespeare Quarterly, 20% of Chapter 2; ‘Caesar’s Gift: Playing the Park in Late Seventeenth-Century London’ for ELH, 25% of Chapter 5; ‘Thomas Betterton, Bookseller’ for The Review of English Studies, 60% of Chapter 4. Of the two articles not previously considered for research assessment, one was a brief entry in Notes and Queries and the other a Times Literary Supplement ‘Commentary’ feature published in 2009 and not returned to the REF. Overall, approximately 90% of the output, a monograph of 100,000 words, consists of material not previously submitted for research assessment.
