Fortress Britain: High security, insecurity and the challenge of preventing harm
This paper, published by the new economics foundation, picks up on themes developed in Ground Control, focusing on the increase in high security in the built environment and the impact that has on fear, trust and cohesion in communities The paper charts the impact of Secured by Design, which is now a precondition for planning permission for public buildings, tracing the history of the policy, which originated in the US. It also includes new research, carried out in conjunction with the Peabody Trust, investigating the impact of Secured by Design on residents and practitioners on a Peabody Estate in Pimlico.
