Double-weighted statement

This monograph was commissioned in 2003 by Edinburgh University Press, and is the result of over 15 years of data collection, analysis, writing and revision. It is the first in 150 years to deal with the history of Muslim rule and settlement in south Italy and Sicily. One of the great conceptual challenges of writing this book was to draw together into a coherent whole very disparate subject matter, from the ‘worlds’ of Islam, the Latin West and Byzantium, many of which are the preserve of specialists and which extend over a wide and complex chronological and regional range.
