<02> Originality: Desktop grids are extended with clouds and a new scheduler developed that submits failed or late work units to cloud nodes.

Significance: Desktop grids provide a large pool of resources used widely used in different scientific communities. However, worker nodes are prone to delays and failures. This requires resubmission of affected work units (tail problem) that may significantly decrease the performance of desktop grids.

Rigour: This solution is evaluated in a life science scenario that demonstrated execution time reduction of up to 40%.
