Additional information

<23>Originality: The paper proposes a low-cost solution that simplifies the tracking and representation of 2D hand gestures in sign language. It has great potential in Virtual Reality Environments (VEs) where user interaction becomes natural.

Significance: This work gained recognition by starting an on-going collaboration with Griffith University and Alicante University on the development of tools that allow users to naturally explore and manipulate volume visualisation tasks using the Kinect sensor. We have also organised successfully special sessions for WCCI'2010, IWANN'2011, IJCNN'2012 and IPR'2012.

Rigour: Mathematical analysis supports all major findings. Results published in a leading, peer-reviewed conference.
