This article was based on a collaborative research project funded by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. It provided the most comprehensive and up-to-date critical assessment of research developments in tourism economics over the past decade. The assessment was based on rigorous economic theories, from not only mainstream neoclassical economics, but also alternative perspectives such as institutional economics. For the first time this article highlighted the emerging directions of research such as tourism supply chain and global interdependence of tourism demand.
