The project that resulted in ‘Cuba’s Wild East’ began in 1993 with research undertaken at the University of Maryland, where Hulme spent a year as Rockefeller Resident Fellow. After slowly collecting and developing material over the next 13 years, in 2006 Hulme became Principal Investigator on the AHRC-funded ‘American Tropics’ project. This allowed him to take two dedicated research trips, one to Cuba in 2007, another to various US archives in 2008. The research for the book often involved locating unpublished papers. During the research for the book, Hulme visited nineteen libraries and archives (some on multiple occasions), only four of which are located in the UK.
