Additional information

Withington edited this volume, which originated with a British Academy funded conference he organized in 2006. He then selected the most complementary and apposite papers and commissioned chapters. He secured an agreement from the editor of the Journal of Early Modern History to consider the articles for publication. Withington researched and wrote the substantial introduction 'Citizens and Soldiers - the Renaissance Context', pp. 3 - 31 , which both introduces the volume and outlines the intellectual agenda. This was circulated to contributors. He co-ordinated the authors' responses to the readers' reports and edited each chapter.
