Before Auschwitz: Irène Némirovsky and the Cultural Landscape of Inter-war France (Routledge Studies in Twentieth Century Literature)
This is the first academic study in English of Némirovsky’s literature. It encompasses the entirety of Némirovsky’s oeuvre (16 novels, a biography and around 50 short stories). It situates this body of work within its socio-cultural and literary contexts by analysing the large number of published reviews of the novels and comparing the novels in detail with other contemporary works. The book therefore required the collection and analysis of a considerable body of material and the use of primary sources (publishers’ archives and author’s manuscripts) held at the Institut Mémoires de l’Edition Contemporaine (IMEC) in Caen, France.
