An analytical framework and tool ('InteRa') for integrating the informal recycling sector in waste and resource management systems in developing countries
Recognising the contribution of the informal sector to solid waste management in developing countries is controversial. This research was commissioned by the international professional body ISWA’s Task Force on Globalisation and Waste (www.iswa.org/en/685/task_force_details/tf/show_detail/task-force-on-globalisation-and-waste-management.html) and will underpin an official ISWA Position Paper currently being negotiated. The new analytical framework developed here facilitates the design of sustainable integration initiatives appropriate to each local situation; it builds on international, inter-disciplinary research and experience. Winner of the 2013 ISWA Publication Award (www.iswa.org/nc/en/110/news_detail/article/iswa-publications-award-2013-results/79.html). Already adopted in the field (e.g. New Delhi, www.chintan-india.org/, aiden@chintan-india.org); by academia (e.g. Cambridge; Lahore, Pakistan; doi:10.1177/0734242X13499811); smartphone application under construction (www.d-waste.com/).
