Additional information

This article presented for the first time the use of a multi-dimensional time-varying vector derived from vibrations in a honey bee hive allowing swarming prediction several days in advance. This work led to European Union funding FP7-SME-2012 (“Swarmonitor”, approx. £1.2M) in collaboration with The Bee Farmers Association Ltd (UK), European Professional Bee Keepers Association (Germany), Centre Apicole de Recherche et d'Information (Belgium), ARNIA Ltd (UK), Capaz GMBH (Germany), Szomel (Hungary), and Institut National De La Rechereche Agronomique (France). The research was featured in Scientific American (“What’s the buzz” 09/06/2013), New Scientist (16/02/2011) and on BBC Radio 4 (“Farming Today” 07/03/2013).
