This paper appeared as a featured article in Water Resour. Res., and was described in Eos, Transactions American Geophysical Union 92(48), 29 November 2011, p 452 as a research highlight. The paper is the basis for two further publications by the same authors (Water Resour. Res, 2012, 48(9): W09502 and J. Hydrol., 2013, http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jhydrol.2013.09.014). The methodology developed for Germany was chosen for a project of the South African Water Research commission: Modelling daily rain gauge network measurement responses under changing climate scenarios (2011-2013).
