Printmaking: a contemporary perspective
Commissioned by Black Dog Publishing, this book focuses on key technical advances within the history of printmaking and positions the intention of the artist at the forefront of debates on the role of printmaking in fine art practice. It argues for a closer scrutiny of the relationship between intention, process and the particular qualities of each medium in the study of the fine art print. In particular, the book argues for the relevence of the multiple image as a means of distributing ideas. The arguments developed from the AHRC funded ‘ Personalised Surface’ Project on which Coldwell was Principal Investigator, as well as other curatorial projects such as ‘Morandi’s Legacy:Influences on British Art’. The book launch included a curated exhibition at ‘Work Gallery’ London including work by Baumgartner, Craig-Martin, Hamilton and a public conversation at Chelsea College of Art with Stephen Bury & Oriana Baddeley. The book was reviewed in peer review journals ‘Print Quarterly’, ‘Printmaking Today’ , ‘Imprint’ (Australia) and ‘Grabado Y Edicion’. Coldwell wrote a related article for ‘Printmaking Today’ (‘In exciting Times’ Autumn 2010) and was invited to contribute to ‘The South Bank Show’ and Resonance FM Radio. Coldwell gave additional talks at: Lightbox Guilford, Pallant House, Summerleaze Gallery and Spike Island, Bristol. As a result of the book, Coldwell was invited as keynote speaker at the ’7th Impact Conference- Melbourne-Australia 2011’ , keynote at ‘Wrexham Printmaking Symposium 2011’, Guest Speaker at ‘Multiplied’ Christies London 2010, was invited as Chair of Jury IMPRINT 2011, ‘Kulisiewicz International Graphic Arts Triennial’, Warsaw, Poland, guest artist at Montclair State University, USA and invited as guest speaker at ‘Replica - Reflections on Contemporary Printmaking’ organised by Centro de Investigação de Artes e Cultura (CIAC) and the University of Algarve and funded by the Direção Geral das Artes, 2013.
