Additional information

The work focuses on the quantitative measurement of lubricant film thickness in high-pressure contacts. Film thickness was simultaneously measured by optical interferometry and electrical capacitance allowing, for the first time, precise calibration of electrical capacitance in elastohydrodynamic contacts. The results of this work are relevant to the evaluation of lubrication in machine elements such as gears, cams and rolling bearings. The research was sponsored by SKF which will use these results to quantify the film thickness in research activities to better understand the physics and chemistry of lubricated rolling bearings.
