Additional information

This paper describes a mechanical resonator with an unprecedented combination of high resonance frequency and quality factor. Experiments with nanoresonators allow quantum mechanics to be studied with ‘large’ objects containing many thousands of atoms, but standard fabrication techniques based on etching lead to degraded quality factors and hence poor quantum lifetimes. We showed that resonators fabricated ‘bottom-up’ from nanotubes do not suffer this problem, and that the motion of the entire device should be coolable to its ground state in a standard laboratory cryostat. Exploring this behavior further is part of a new £1.7M Templeton Foundation grant.
