Additional information

The decision support system developed as the result of this research work won a Medipex Innovation Award (UK) in 2010. The system was successfully applied for predicting the clinical state and to devise optimal therapeutic strategies for 3 severely-ill patients in intensive care unit (ICU) at the Sheffield Northern General Hospital (2008-2009, contact: Dr J Ross, Cardiac ICU Consultant). All 3 patients underwent cardiac bypass surgery and needed their hemodynamic variables to be monitored and stabilised. The benefits of the closed-loop control system include keeping suture lines intact, reduction of post-operative bleeding, and relieving tedium for the ICU consultant.
