English abstract

A recent historiographical trend focuses on archives as not only repositories of sources but as objects of institutional history. This article expands on this trend to show that archives were both tools of power and sites of economic, social and political conflict. Study of the Venetian chancery at a time of substantial changes shows that the rulers worried about the fragility of their archive and the reliability of its employees. The history of archives emerges as a promising field precisely because it can shed light on both the history of the state and the social context of political history.
