Additional information

The method described in this paper will enable low cost monitoring of very large scale aerospace structures and was supported by Airbus (Contact Dr Christophe Paget, Airbus UK, Christophe.Paget@airbus.com). It has potential applications both in the design stages of new lightweight aircraft and for in-flight monitoring. This, and other work on accurate location of AE sources in complex structures, was part of a keynote presentation in the World Congress on Acoustic Emission in Beijing in 2011.
