A Silurian armoured aplacophoran and implications for molluscan phylogeny.
This Nature paper provides palaeontological evidence that unambiguously links, for the first time, two groups of molluscs (the Polyplacophora and Aplacophora) whose evolutionary relationships have long been contentious. It was funded from a multi-institute NERC grant (~£400K, ~40K to Imperial), and is one of a series of high-impact papers on the three-dimensional soft-bodied fossils of the Herefordshire Lagerstätte (e.g. doi: 10.1098/rspb.2009.2122 and doi: 10.1098/rsbl.2010.0540). Publication generated significant media interest (magazine, newspaper and online articles; e.g. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/10/121003132324.htm). The work led to the Palaeontographical Society inviting Sutton to give its Annual Address in 2012.
