Additional information

This article extends the agenda of my earlier essay, ‘Elvis and Darmstadt, or: Twentieth-Century Music and the Politics of Cultural Pluralism’, published in twentieth-century music 4/1 (March 2007), and submitted to RAE2008. ‘The IMS Cut’ re-examines the question of the incommensurability of the spheres of high-art and popular musics – but with new critical perspectives. Some of the material on pp. 10–11 and on p. 15 re-uses text from the sister article, but most of the treatment is new, including the discussions of Miklitsch, Lévi-Strauss and especially the postcolonialist perspectives from Bhabha.
