Significance of output:

The first experimental silicon modulator to demonstrate a high extinction ratio at a data rate of 40Gb/s for TE and TM polarization (world record performance), demonstrating that high data rate, modulation is viable in silicon. (patent filed). The first demonstration of a tolerant depletion based optical modulators in silicon for TE and TM polarisations, making fibre-fed modulators in silicon viable. Identified by the Optical Society of America (via Web of Science) as within the top 20 most-cited papers in Optics Express in the 2-years ending April 2013. This work resulted from >£5M EPSRC project (EPSRC –EP/F001428/1).
