Additional information

A significant increase in hardness of H13 tool steel was reported after laser surface modification. New findings on phase transformation and crystallinity are reported for the first time. Laser treatments introduce faster cooling which results in smaller grain size. Increase of hardness due to grain size decrease is in agreement with the Hall–Petch relationship. This project lead to a highly industrial project with multinational company Mincon International Ltd. through Enterprise Ireland Innovation Partnership project and it was awarded DCU Invent Commercialisation Award 2011 by DCU Tech transfer office for the leadership role in this successful industrial collaboration.
