Additional information

The paper presents a novel approach for restoring uniqueness to the matrix Nehari-extension and Hankel-norm approximation problems, which are of central importance in the theory of modern robust control and model reduction. This approach is based on matrix dilation theory and relies only on linear-algebraic arguments which can be easily implemented. A detailed state-space analysis is carried out which clearly illustrates the structure of the optimal solution and offers significant computational advantages compared to previous methods. The techniques facilitate the application of refined versions of H-infinity and Hankel-norm approximation techniques to multivariable control system design.
