Fabrication of Luminescent Monolayered Tungsten Dichalcogenides Quantum Dots with Giant Spin-Valley Coupling
This first realisation and study of single atomic layer WS2 quantum dots (QDs) revealed remarkable properties of QD size-dependent optical behaviour and spin-orbit coupling. The QDs were fabricated chemically with high yield and characterised structurally and optically. The use of WS2 QDs as cell imaging fluorophores is demonstrated and enabled by their enhanced fluorescence and biocompatibility. The strong spin-orbit coupling in WS2 QDs discovered here leads to the appearance of ‘valleys’ in the QDs’ energy levels. These states have unique electron-spin-dependent quantum numbers that could be exploited in future information technology or quantum information devices.
