Dislocation-driven deformations in graphene.
Dislocations are fundamental to the plasticity of materials and in 2D materials their behaviour is relatively unknown. This paper brings together 7 years of hardware development by JEOL for the design of a new monochromator and aberration-corrected TEM for improved imaging, advances in graphene sample fabrication and DFT modelling, to provide the deepest insights regarding strain in 2D crystals at the atomic level. A perspective article in ‘Science’ was written on this paper by Prof. Bonilla (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/337/6091/161.full) and it has led him and other leading theoreticians to re-write the fundamental dislocation theory for 2D materials by introducing rotational energy.
