Der Fremde als Nachbar. Polnische Positionen zur jüdischen Präsenz. Texte seit 1800
As sole editor of this synoptic survey of attitudes among catholic Poles towards their Jewish
neighbours between 1800 and today, François Guesnet outlined the structure of the volume. He held
exclusive responsibility for the selection and annotation of texts, and defined the sections for
translation. He was the sole author of the preface and of the introductions to all chapters. Together
with the series' editor, Dr. Loew, Guesnet edited all translations of included materials. The appendix
containing the biographies of included authors as well as the name index have been prepared by Dr.
Loew, with Guesnet's support.
This anthology offers a survey of attitudes among Catholic Polish authors towards their Jewish neighbours from ca1800 to the present. In seven chapters and almost 100 texts (the majority for the first time translated from Polish), it offers a selection of sympathetic to negative assessments of the impact of the Jewish diasporic community on the surrounding society. The thoughts of aristocrats, academics, clergymen, politicians, administrators and intellectuals offer a comprehensive reflection of a relationship that was more complex than frequently assumed. Containing texts from the prominent like Adam Mickiewicz , John Paul II, to anonymous voices, from the Polish resistance.
