Additional information

This paper provides evidence of the mechanism of hydrocolloid modification using two patented processes (i) US Patent Application 10/498,988 2004 Al-Assaf et al and (ii) US Patent 6,610,810 B2 (Phillips, et al . 2003). The first process resulted in a commercial product (SupergumTM) currently produced by San Ei Gen FFI, Japan. The second process has been sublicensed to produce new hyaluronan derivatives (Balazs, et al.; US Letters Patent: Serial Number 11/160,754) and demineralised bone with enhanced osteoinductive properties (USA Patent application number PCT/IB 2004/050736). Over 5000 osteoinductive sets have been used in oral, maxillofacial and orthopaedic surgery in South Africa.
