Distributed Musical Performances: Architecture and Stream Management
Original data management infrastructure addressed challenges and practical issues of real-time capture, recording, and replay of multiple data streams - high-resolution isochronous media streams (video, audio) and alphanumeric event data - for distributed immersive (music) performance. Tight temporal synchronization achieved between data streams provided MIDI/audio/video cross-referencing capabilities to query and study players' coordination strategies. Enabled most ambitious Internet performance experiments to date: professional piano duo performing rhythmically challenging piece with network latency. Led to highly cited papers at ACM Multimedia (Experiential Telepresence Workshop), MUSICNETWORK, and Sound and Music Computing conferences. Output of highly competitive NSF Major Research Instrumentation grant.
