An algorithm for determination of the fracture angle for the three-dimensional Puck matrix failure criterion for UD composites
The algorithm presented in this paper was the key enabler of the first, subsequently developed, physically based numerical constitutive model for uni-directionally reinforced composites which incorporated the calculation of the orientation of Inter-Fibre-Failure as a function of the actual 3D stress state in the material. This additionally facilitated both the fibre kinking and delamination failure mechanisms to be simulated accurately. The approach grew out of the collaborative research with TU Dresden and was one of the key capabilities which prompted Rolls-Royce to include us into their international University Technology Partnership for Composites, initiated in 2011 (contact details available).
