Additional information

<22> This builds on earlier results to take the automated design of packing heuristics to a new level. It generates powerful local search techniques by computer - rather than by human design. These automatically designed local search engines can employ automatically generated constructive heuristics to provide a starting point in their search. This is having a major impact on the research agenda in this field. Indeed, these results provided the springboard for research being undertaken in a new major EPSRC programme grant (EP/J017515/1) of £6.8M between UCL, Stirling, York and Birmingham, which started in 2012.
