Additional information

<28> This work broke boundaries in that it was the first to study the evolution of unstable systems analytically and rigorously, including an evolutionary bifurcation investigation. Previous studies were solely numerical, with limited results. The results in this paper were confirmed via novel simulations, which enabled an extension up to chaotic systems. This had never been undertaken before. Nurmi et al (2013, J Theor Biol, 321:63-77) have since extended this work to study resource utilisation. A subsequent Carnegie Research Grant provides funding for follow-up studies extending this work to multi-host systems and to model the development of the immune system.
