Additional information

<28> The originality of this paper is demonstrated by noting that it was one of the first to study pathogen control in multi-host systems, going beyond the standard study of population behaviour. It investigated both mathematical techniques and computer simulations to explore control measures in spatial and temporal set-ups. Importantly, the computational approach is easily extendable, and this has enabled new work on seasonality (forcing) to be carried out in pathogen control by international researchers (Pasour et al, 2011. J Theor Biol 278:74-86).
