<12> This paper considers an important problem in epidemiology. It arose from an EPSRC project entitled, “System Dynamics from Individual Interactions: A process algebra approach to epidemiology” (£343K, EP/E006280/1, Principal Investigator Shankland). A cornerstone of the project was close inter-disciplinary and cross-institutional collaboration with Begon (Biological Sciences, Liverpool). This required the establishment of a rigorous underpinning to the standard assumptions of ecological modelling. Publication in a broader mathematical biology journal was an important part of our project outreach, making the technique known to a wider audience (outside of theoretical computer science).
