Skyscraping
This research expands upon an AHRC funded enquiry, entitled ‘Digitised Doubles’ for which I was principal investigator. It examined the creative potential of non-invasive white light 3D body-scanning for self-replication. The exhibition ‘Skyscraping’ at Yorkshire Sculpture Park included new commission 'Moments of Death and Revival,' employing 3D bodyscan data, 2 new videos, 2 large watercolours, a series of small drawings and a neon installation, incorporating shadow and light as a device for trickery and metamorphosis. ‘Skyscraping’ used both innovative applications of cutting edge technologies and simple tools to create metamorphic, animated shadow plays and uncanny doublings. To fully examine the 3D capture process, Brass Art (Anneke Pettican, Chara Lewis, Kristin Mojsiewicz) visited scanning booths at London College of Fashion, Glasgow University and Wicks and Wilson Ltd. Further investigations of rapid prototyping technologies and material tests were undertaken at the University of Huddersfield, Rapidform RCA, Ogle Models and Prototypes. ‘Skyscraping’ was sponsored by 3D Systems. Innovative aspects of this research included a thorough examination of how to retain detail in 3D printed artefacts; this new methodology provoked questioning and testing of the limitations of scanning technologies. The underpinning research formed the basis of papers selected for peer reviewed conferences: ISEA, Ruhr (2010), and the ‘Technologies of Drawing’ conference, University of Huddersfield (2011). David Thorp, Curator of Contemporary Projects at the Henry Moore Foundation and Director of the South London Gallery, and YSP Director of Programmes, Clare Lilley, position the project in relation to the history of Women’s Art practice and the field of Contemporary Sculpture. 2 watercolour drawings were selected for The Jerwood Drawing Prize 2008 National Touring Exhibition, and Brass Art were selected for ArtFutures08 alongside leading contemporary artists. 'Moments of Death and Revival' was selected by Fairburn and Hitchman, for ‘Concrete and Glass’ (2010).
