Additional information

Inspired Design: Jacquard & Entrepreneurial Textiles aimed to demonstrate how textile designers “bring together both artistic talent and a scientific frame of mind” and presented an exhibition of “designs and work that represent 21st Century design growth areas of creative/innovative textiles and digital technologies.” Other exhibitors included: Joanna Berzowska (CA), Christy Matson (US), Barbara Lane (CA), Janis Jefferies (UK), Pauline Verbeek-Cowart (US).

Parry-Williams’ applied research drew upon and extended his cross-situational practice and collaboration, focussed on industrial textile and fashion design and development and aimed to test theories developed in the earlier research that a fusion of craft and industrial knowledge and practice might lead to more greatly sophisticated outcomes. It exploited multi-faceted collaborative networks (industrial textile manufacturers in Japan, and fashion designers in the UK and Germany) and resulted in the creation of a unique collection of apparel textiles and men’s and women’s garments for the high-end boutique market. As an outcome, the exhibition included: 8 showpiece garments, 30+ hand and mill-woven fabrics, with the underpinning research and development presented in a digital film.

Further outcomes included: a conference paper: 'Textiles for Boutique Clothing', Inspired Design: Jacquard and Entrepreneurial Textiles, Hendersonville, USA (7-10/1/2009); and a catalogue: Magie. D., Ed. (2008) Inspired Design: Jacquard & Entrepreneurial Textiles, The Centre for Craft Creativity & Design, University of North Carolina, USA, pp26-33. Parry-Williams was subsequently invited to present his research outcomes at NCSU (USA); NSCAD (CA); OCAD (CA); Tokyo Zoukei University (JPN); Meijiro & UEDA Colleges of Fashion (JPN); FAD School (INDIA); and was appointed Visiting Professor and consultant, SHUTTLE Advanced Master Class Woven Textile Design, University for Art and Design Linz/Textile Centre Haslach, Austria.
