A novel method for quantifying spatial correlations between patterns of atherosclerosis and hemodynamic factors.
This paper introduces a Monte-Carlo approach to estimating probabilities of spatial co-incidence, applying it to a problem in cardiovascular science. The generality of the technique allows broad application to assess the statistical significance of apparent spatial relationships. The method’s effectiveness helped win a grant (EIT ICT-Labs, Activity 13064, £108k), allowing us to characterise the effectiveness of image-based guidance systems for visually impaired people (J. Rivera-Rubio et al. "Mobile Visual Assistive Apps: Benchmarks of Vision Algorithm Performance", Lecture Notes in Computer Science 2013;8158:30-40). Led to invitation to speak at 8th Symposium on Biomechanics in Vascular Biology and Cardiovascular Disease, Rotterdam 2013.
