Additional information

Turbulent flow over dunes in rivers is of a huge interest in geophysical research and environmental engineering. Large-scale coherent flow structures contribute significantly to the sediment transport. The bed deformation has not been studied before theselarge-eddy simulations, which provide high-resolution and detailed analyses of coherent vortices in the flow. This work overcomes doubts about generation, evolution, and interaction of large structures with the free surface causing strong upwellings of the flow, known as “boil” events. Moreover, typical sediment transport models that employ mean flow characteristics can be improved by taking into account the instantaneous flow features.
