Double-weighted statement

The research sought to understand the history of common land across 400 years, by identifying the changing cultural context at national level, through analysis of both secondary literature and printed primary sources, and by reconstructing in detail from original manuscript sources the management of commons in four local case studies in northern England, Norfolk and mid-Wales. The arguments presented in the book thus involved extensive collection and analysis of primary material held in eight repositories across England and Wales, as well as actively seeking out archives (such as local commoners’ meeting minute books) retained in private hands.
