Additional information
Good cementing technique is important for the long-term survival of joint implants. Particularly in the acetabulum, good penetration of bone cement into the underlying trabecular bone is important. It was hypothesised that use of an acetabular cup with a flange would induce higher pressures in the cement resulting in better penetration. In a comparison of flanged and unflanged cups, it was found that the flanged cup did not increase cement penetration, but did result in a more uniform thickness of the cement mantle. The author made a substantial contribution to carrying out the study (including acquisition of study data).
